In case you missed it, last night Marconi Stallions defeated Rockdale Ilinden 9-0 at Marconi Stadium. According to our research, this is the biggest win over a team in first place, not only in NPL but also in Australian football league history (not counting anything below NPL 1). The A-League record stands at 8-0 for the biggest win which was City over Glory.
The match saw a hat-trick and a brace with Costanzo scoring in the 13th, 15th and 47th minutes and Temelkovski in the 5th and 76th. Bouman, Maya, Mlinaric and Susovic also added their name to the scoresheet in a match that seemed like anyone could have gotten a goal.
A 6-0 scoreline at half time, Marconi converted all 6 of their shots on target and had 10 shots in total to Rockdales 3 shots with 1 on target.

For the league leaders Rockdale would be scratching their heads wondering where it all went wrong. However we can’t take anything away from Marconi who are having an amazing couple of games with 13 goals in their last two after (defeated APIA 4-1 prior), and being held scoreless against Spirit and Olympic. The fact that they’ve beaten the two top teams in back to back weeks in considerable fashion really shows that they are a serious threat to the premiership and championship this season.
To add insult to injury Rockdale Coach Paul Dee was shown a red card for arguing for a penalty in the 81st minute. Mind you the score was already 8-0 at this stage, perhaps he thought there was a chance of a comeback at 8-1? Nevertheless the league leaders will have a tough training session before they travel to Blacktown City this Sunday whilst Marconi will be looking to continue their run up the table with home game against Sutherland on Saturday night.
